There has been explosive growth of coffee enthusiasm lately. I’d like to believe it more about flavor & philosophy than a caffeinated craze. We have countless choices today. Big names players, 24-7 convenience stores and your trusty local deli, all touting “a great cup of coffee”.
Some of my blue collar brethren who once sneered at the $$$ are now believers at those familiar “green sign” big box coffeehouses. Beyond this, boutique coffee shops and micro roasters cater to the tide of discriminating coffee drinkers; those with more obtuse sophisticated expectations. It all boils down to the question, who doesn’t want a good cup of coffee?
But here’s the rub, what is good coffee?
Is it a lively vibrant breakfast roast with acidity, floral notes you crave? Perhaps you prefer a more developed stoic smoky Italian roast with a bitter mocha finish? Do you consider the spectrum of unique origin flavors, how bean density & roasting techniques affect caramelization? Maybe you simply love a cup of strong coffee from your local deli. A house type roast "lite & sweet" grabbed on the go from the 24-7 fast mart.

Coffee is a very subjective subject and there is no right or wrong answer here. I've had great and garbage coffee served from a plethora of sources. Friends with wild endorsements about magical concoctions from a certain street cart vendor. The frugal colleague expounds the killer bargains of that Mc-chain "burger joint". Some high end cafe menu offerings are superb, while others simply taste like tires; a burnt-bottom of the pot bitter disappointment.
