Following countless cold morning walking brake tests along precarious dimly lit track, pensive overnight Change of Engine runs to lonely terminals. The pressured seemingly endless hostling moves in and out of a diesel infused, steam soaked engine house to the militant discipline of scheduled passenger train service, I’m fairly confident when I say, there is nothing more passionately anticipated by a railroader during a shift in service than a good cup of coffee.
The smell of a fresh brew. The aromatic steam rising below your face, heating hands and lips on a crisp cool autumn evening. The savory victory sip following a slack controlled smooth stop. Coffee is a sensory embrace that celebrates and relaxes the soul.
For an early report, coffee is a job briefing staple. It's a warmhearted handshake welcoming a crew together in safe commonality to face a day of service.
Perhaps it’s an evening cup. Like a well-heeled old friend. One who supports and acknowledges effort, renewing our faith and dedication during a long night.
A quality cup of coffee during service is an anticipated treasure often juxtaposed by the abrasive camaraderie of a good crew. It’s the ties of our tracks on this journey and I would change nothing in this regard.
